How to improve the quality of cybersecurity in 5 steps?

An advanced cybersecurity system is a suite of tools and procedures responsible for securing the various components of the IT environment, creating a coherent and easily manageable structure. This is the goal pursued by those responsible for security development, as it should, in principle, guarantee the organization a satisfactory level of protection.

It's worth noting, however, that while such a system will undoubtedly protect us against most known threats, its implementation often involves significant costs and the need to reorganize some of the established standards.

Securing against complex and sophisticated forms of attacks is an incredibly important aspect that shouldn't be underestimated or overlooked. A detailed analysis of reports and logs allows us to conclude that a significant portion of the attacks our organization faces are simple, and we can protect ourselves against them through proper workflow and best practices. Below are 5 steps you can take to improve your security today!

1. Check if your login credentials have been made public, and if so, change them immediately!

There are many free tools that will allow you to check if your login credentials have been compromised in known breaches (such as haveibeenpwned.com). Use them regularly, as the information that your password has been made public is a sign that you should change it as soon as possible, not only on the service that leaked it, but also on those where you use the same or similar credentials.

2. Update your software and operating system!

Check if all the latest updates (especially security updates) are installed on the devices you use for daily work. If you haven't already, use automatic updates, which will not only allow you to enjoy the latest features but also improve the system and application's ability to protect against attacks.

3. Improve your security and work experience by using password managers or multi-factor authentication.

While it's crucial not to use the same passwords across systems, remembering a large number of complex credentials can be problematic for many users. Password management software can help, as it will securely store your login information and facilitate access to other systems.

Is a password manager not the solution for you? Go a step further and use multi-factor authentication, logging in using a few simple authentication methods, such as a PIN, a hardware token, or a phone app!

4. Verify that the solutions you use are not subject to known vulnerabilities!

Create a list of tools used in your organization and search publicly available databases (such as CVE.mitre.org) for known vulnerabilities. Early detection of a security vulnerability will allow you to quickly take steps to patch it and reduce the risk of an attack on your IT. Consider implementing a vulnerability manager, which will automatically repeat this process in the future and inform you when action is needed.

5. Ensure your employees are aware of cyberthreats.

End-user security and awareness are key to effective protection against cyberattacks! Ensure your team regularly expands their knowledge of threats, methods for recognizing them, and best practices for minimizing the risk of an incident. You can achieve this in many ways, for example, by scheduling periodic cybersecurity training or conducting controlled user awareness tests.

A few simple measures are enough to build a significantly higher level of security, not only in the systems we use at work but also in those we use privately. These best practices shouldn't pose a significant burden on your budget, will positively impact your work comfort and safety, and, when implemented across the entire organization, will provide a solid foundation for building a team aware of threats.
